The 5 Most Common Car Accidents

Posted on : February 5, 2016

While car accidents can be extremely common in the Alabama or Georgia area, they can also result in serious or life-threatening injuries. Here are the five most common injuries sustained in a car crash, and how you can get help if you or a loved one were hurt in an accident.

1. Head & Brain Injuries

Head and brain injuries are often sustained in a car crash when the victim’s head strikes the windshield or side of the car, or when flying debris strikes the victim in the head. These injuries can range from mild concussions to deadly penetrating head wounds.

2. Broken Bones

In many car accidents, victims will suffer broken bones when the force of the car crumples on them. The most common bones to break are the bones in the feet, legs, and hands. Broken noses are often sustained as a result of air bag deployment in a crash.

3. Whiplash

Most car accident victims have some sort of whiplash injury as a result of the crash. When the car is struck, the force of the collision causes the victim’s head to “whip” back and forth, causing damage to the delicate tissues in the neck. Whiplash injuries aren’t fatal, but they can leave lasting effects, including chronic pain and headaches for weeks, months, or even years after the accident.

4. Back Injuries

The force of a car crash can easily cause damage to the vertebrae in the back or the spinal cord. Spinal cord injuries can range from bruising to a completely severed spinal cord, which results in permanent paralysis.

5. Emotional Trauma

Often, victims of car crashes will be emotionally traumatized after the crash, potentially requiring therapy and medication. Emotional trauma is very real after a car accident and is compensable under Alabama and Georgia law. Like other injuries, it too causes lasting effects for the victim.
